Preview- RoPS vs JIPPO

I am definitely excited for this match. I've looked forward to it ever since I left RoPS. Not that I want to hurt my old club, its merely an opportunity to prove to myself and to RoPS that I was good enough to play more for them. Unfortunately, things didn't go as well as I would have liked up there, but I hold no ill-will towards them. But I think every player looks forward to playing their old team.

Both teams have quite a bit riding on the game. RoPS has let their lead at the top of the table slip to just 4 points and a loss tomorrow could prove devastating (hence my dilemma- of course I want nothing more then to win but I also want RoPS to win the championship). JIPPO meanwhile are fighting to stave off relegation. Currently we hold a 2 point lead over GBK and a win for us could really put us into safety. GBK take on KuPS in Kuopio, and I'd have to think that KuPS wins that one.

As for the team news, RoPS welcomes back Drogba from suspension, but loses Antii Peura. Other then that, I believe they have the rest of the squad available. Taking care of Drogba will definitely be a handful for our backline, and we can't allow any slip ups like we did against PP-70 last week. Then of course you have RoPS midfield which is stacked with talent.

JIPPO will lose Mikko Maatanen and Tero Tahvanainen to suspension, but will welcome back Mikko Ikkonen. It remains to be seen who will start in goal, but I would have to think Lassi Hurskainen would keep his place after his last 2 performances. I should keep my place at right midfield, and hopefully I can extend my scoring run to 3 games.

It must be said that JIPPO have been in better form the last 3 games. We've taken all 3 points in our last 3 (TPV, PK-35, and PP-70) while RoPS have been held to two 0-0 draws in their last 2 games. Their lack of scoring will be definitely be welcome, but they haven't conceded more then 1 goal since a 2-2 draw against PK-35 over a month ago.

So that's all the team news i can think of. I'll leave predictions up to you guys.

Jippo 2 PP-70 1

Another 3 points headed our way this weekend. I can't tell you how immense these points were for us. We now have a 2 point cushion from relegation and at the same time severely dented PP-70's chances of avoiding the drop. It wasn't the prettiest of matches, but I don't think you will hear any complaints from us.

The first half was especially unpleasing to the eye. There were times when I wondered if we were playing ping pong rather then football. Neither team was good with the ball, and there were few chances. There was 1 clear cut chance, however, and I am still trying to work out how exactly the ball did not end up in the net.

A long clearance managed to bounce over the opposing goalkeeper's head and with no one in the goal everyone must have been thinking that Jussi Kemmo would put Jippo up 1-0. But somehow, when it was hard to miss than to score, Jussi put the ball wide. I have seen misses like this in plenty of bloopers videos, but never in person. But credit to Jussi as he would make amends later in the game.

Other then that chance, there really wasn't much in the half. I had a particularly good half although I did not see the ball as often as I would like. Nevertheless, I felt something positive happened each time I touched it, and I seemed to be running past multiple defenders with the ball with ease. Unfortunately, nothing would come of my good work as the final ball from me or someone else was lacking.

The second half was a much better game. Both teams seemed to have collected themselves and it became much more of a possession game. I would say we were the better side, but we managed to give up a goal at the 55 minute mark. A mix up between our central defenders allowed the ball to bounce in between and over them leaving an easy finish for PP-70 striker Mika Lahtinen (joint top scorer with 16).

The goal seemed to kick start our game though. We attacked with much more purpose, and tied the game at 60 minutes. I'll admit it was a bit of a fluke, but again you won't hear us complain. I collected a ball wide after some good work out of midfield and attempted to put in a cross. However, the cross turned into a inch perfect shot as it saild over the goalkeeper's head and into the top corner of the far post!

We continued to play well, and I continued to have a stellar game. The next 15 minutes we would constantly pressure the opposing goal. I had an opportunity to add a second as a cross was flicked onto the far post. It managed to go over my defenders head and after chasing the ball down I put a shot on goal that beat the goalkeeper, but was unfortunately, cleared off the line by a defender. We had several other opportunities inside the box with Jussi Kemmo, Sasha Antilainen and myself doing the damage, but unfortunately the were all deflected.

On one of these occasions though, I managed to split two defenders inside the box with the 'elastico' move I had pulled off a few weeks back. But my left footed effort was blocked. The game took a turn around the 70 minute mark or so. Our right back, Mikko Maatanen received his marching orders after receiving a second yellow card. I slotted into right back to fill his place, and it must be said that I was a little worried.

But my worries were laid to rest when Jussi Kemmo collected a cross from Tinge and calmly skipped past his mark and deposited the ball into the back of the net less then 5 minutes after the red card. We managed to hold out for the rest of the match almost adding a third after some good work from Sasha gave Tinge with a clear opportunity. Unfortunately, it was smuggled by the goalkeeper. We were under a lot of pressure towards the end, but held off and won 2-1 victors.

I was named the sponsor's man of the match and received the Veikkaus gold medallion. Lassi Hurskainen was named man of the match after a good performance in goal for us. We take on RoPS next, which will definitely be an intense match for me personally. I would love to put one over on them!!

Jippo 3 PK-35 1

Three BIG BIG BIG points came our way this afternoon. We left the field 3-1 winners over the traveling Helsinki side and more importantly came away with 3 points that have now moved us out of the relegation zone!!! I also opened my account with Jippo after a great cross from Jan Berg to put us up 2-1.

We certainly didn't start as the brighter of the two sides. In fact, the entire first half was pretty poor from our end even though we scored 3 goals. Passing to our own team was at a premium and put us under a bit of pressure although we came out relatively unscathed.

I have no idea how our first goal was scored. Jussi Kemo got the opener while I was receiving treatment on the side of the field. While running back to get into my defensive position, I mistakenly ran into Etu Sassila of PK-35 with my head crashing into his. Unfortunately for me, my tooth managed to find its way through my lip, leaving a gaping hole.

After some rather crude medicinal work, I re-entered the field with a makeshift band-aid covering my lip. However, the band-aid didn't exactly do anything for the pain. But I soldiered on. PK-35 managed to work themselves back into the match at the 20 minute with Petteri Kaijasilta doing what he does best...scoring.

A few minutes later, I would help restore the lead, however. Jan Berg found some space as a crossed the half way line and put in a great cross. I made a pretty good darting run and met the ball with a slide and deftly placed into the corner of the net. It was a pretty goal I must say, but most of the credit should go to Jan for an immaculate pass.

We were awful in possession and for some reason opted to long balls into the heart of the PK defense. There defenders easily towered over us and won most of the balls. However, despite the lack of possession John Keister managed to give us a two goal cushion heading into half time. After picking up the ball near the half, John noticed PK's defensive line was playing rather high. He made a long touch behind the defense and after rounding the goalkeeper deposited the ball into the back of the net despite the last ditch effort from a PK defender.

The second half was much better on our end. Our passing was much cleaner and we found plenty of space behind the PK line although never managed to take advantage of it. I managed to make several good runs behind the line, but unfortunately the pass was either cut out before reaching me or was too long. We were too slow in recognizing the pass as several others had made some terrific runs behind the line, however, and we really should have managed to put a few more goals in.

Specifically, I missed a glorious chance to put the game away. Sasha Antilainen ran onto a ball into the space on the wing and after out racing his mark played a hard ball centrally to me. With little pressure I managed to put the ball over the goal from six yards out. To be fair though, it was played with quite a bit of pace and bounced just before reaching me. Regardless, though I should have put the ball into the old onion bag.

PK dominated proceedings toward the end of the match, but never truly threatened with the exception of a Peter Louis (fellow American) drive that flashed wide of the goal. Lassi Hurskainen, our goalkeeper, did a terrific job of gathering crosses although his distribution was a bit off (sorry Lassi couldn't make you sound too good!).

In the end, it was a much needed 3 points and a happy day for me despite having to go to the hospital afterwards. I had 3 stitches placed on the inside of my mouth and have a lovely white, butter-fly band-aid across my lip (the band-aid doesn't have a butterfly on it, its a butter-fly band-aid ie helps to pinch together the hole in my lip).

Look forward to my Ykkonen wrap at Football in Finland

Lineups US vs Brazil

Well SBI just put up the lineups for the match tonight. Here they are...

US:
-------------------Dempsey----------------------
Beasley------------Wolff---------------Donovan
------------Feilhaber------Bradley--------------
Pearce-------------------------------Cherundolo
--------------Onyewu---Bocanegra--------------
---------------------Howard----------------------

Brazil:

-----------------Alves------------------------
Robinho-----------Ronaldinho---------Kaka
---------Gilberto Silva------Mineiro---------
Gilberto---------------------------------Maicon
---------------Juan--------Lucio---------------
---------------------Doni------------------------

Generally, I don't like Donovan on the wing, but in this game it might be a brilliant move. The wings will be where Brazil is most vulnerable. Hate that Dempsey is playing as the target striker, and don't like the Wolff addition (his time is done with USMNT, then again who else is there?). But this is probably the best line-up we could put out with the squad available.

Preview- US vs Brazil

If anything this will definitely be an entertaining game for somebody although I doubt it will be the American supporters. Brazil is fielding a full strength side with the likes of Ronaldinho and Kaka pulling the strings. Of course, their starting status is not guaranteed. After opting to skip the Copa America the two have been told they would have to work their way back into the squad by Brazilian coach Dunga.

The US will also be fielding a full strength squad with the likes of Landon Donovan and Damarcus Beasley (does anyone still think we have a chance...kidding, well sort of!). In any case, it will definitely be a firm test for our Nats, and I can't say I'm very confident. We haven't exactly been outstanding in possession in our last few matches, and against a team like Brazil you have to value every chance you touch the ball. And with the lack of a true international caliber striker, things definitely look a little bleak for us.

Timmy Howard will get the nod in goal, and we are in safe hands there. The back four I imagine will be Stevie Cherundolo, Gooch, Los, and the left side is up for grabs. I would be willing to bet that Spector gets the nod their even though we have the natural lefty Heath Pearce in the squad (wait a minute...Bornstein's not in the squad? Is Bob finally over the love affair? No, Bob has done his best to stay away from the MLS teams with important matches). Los and Gooch scare me to be honest. Neither has had a really solid match in a while, and with the attacking prowess of Brazil it could turn into a long night.

The midfield should look something like...Dempsey and DaBeas on the wings with Michael Bradley and Benny Feilhaber in the middle with Landon and EJ up top. Dempsey and DaBeas should cause some problems. But I am worried about the Bradley/Benny combo. Don't get me wrong, the two are tremendously talented but neither is an attacking mid. So we are essentially playing with two defensive midfielders, which will pull down either EJ or Landon (most likely Landon) stranding the other alone up top.

I would rather see Benny with Landon in front of him and then EJ with a Brian Ching. Unfortunately, Ching isn't in the squad and the only other forward available is Josh Wolff (why are we calling this guy in...his time with USMNT is up!!). Landon just isn't a striker and excels when he is allowed a free role behind the front two where he can run out of midfield.

Despite this, we will see chances during this game, and hopefully we can actually finish this game. Brazil's wing backs will push forward at every opportunity which will leave a ton of space for Dempsey and DaBeas to work with. They will be key to our attack and if they can get in some dangerous spots out wide and play a few good crosses then we should be able to get a goal or two. Then its just up to the defense to stop Robinho, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Vagner Love...ok ya so that probably won't happen, but I can always have dreams of repeating that magnificent performance in 1998 (I think 1998) when Preki scores a great goal and Keller has the greatest performance of any goalkeeper in the history of football!!

Prediction- unfortunately I'm going to go with a 3-1 Brazil win.

TPV 0 Jippo 1

Well I can't write too much about the match as I didn't make the trip to Tampere. I was forced to sit out due to yellow card accumulation, and decided to stay back and train on my own rather then make the long trip to Tampere.

From what I have heard, we didn't exactly play that well, but John Keister's first half goal ended up being enough to give us a hard fought win. It appears we were under a bit of pressure towards the close of the match as TPV searched for the equalizer, but obviously we managed to handle the pressure well enough and come home as victors.

The three points is massive for us, and currently we are only 2 points away from being safe from relegation. Of course, we will need results to go our way today if we want it to stay that way. GBK managed to take a win from PK-35 whom we will play next weekend.

In other news, Finland managed to come out of Belgrade with a dull 0-0 tie. One of the other benefits of staying behind yesterday was that I was able to catch the match. Finland from the start were obviously looking for a draw and that's it. Experience over youth seemed to be the preferred option for Roy Hodgeson's selection with Mika Nurmela getting the start out wide.

That selection told me enough about the game before it even begain. A player like Nurmela, who at his age couldn't really offer much more then helping to keep the ball when playing out wide. If he's played more centrally then I could see him having a bigger impact, but out wide he neither has the pace nor the stamina. What resulted was a very dull, uneventful draw from the Finnish side.

In the end, a draw is a good result for them though so I can't fault Roy too much. I think most Finns would have taken a draw in Serbia before the match began, and I assume and hope they will play a more youthful and offensive line-up when they take on Poland Wednesday to grab three points and really put them back in the thick of things. If they can manage to pull that result they may be able to squeeze into Euro 2008.

They Call Me....Ronaldinho

Ok so they really don't call me Ronaldinho, but this past weekend I did my best impression. With a Brazilian defender barreling at me, I sweetly pulled off Ronaldinho's elastico move, sending my defender the wrong way and nearly onto the ground. Those that have played with me more then one time know that I do this trick pretty much every chance I get. Here's a link where you all can watch. It happens at the 3:20 mark. Enjoy...I know I have (about a hundred times!!!)

Jippo 2 TP-47 2

It was a dreary day for my first game in my new jersey. Rain poured down for most of the day making for a slick surface and a not so pretty game. Despite the conditions, we actually started quite well. Tornio were good in possession, but hardly created anything in the early-goings whereas we were quite effective at carving out chances on the counter.

At about the 10 minute mark, after some good build up play, the ball was played out wide to me near the top of the box. I took a good settling touch and then struck a terrific shot only for it to deflect off of a defender before getting to the goal. A few minutes later, Jussi picked up a clearance and drove at this defender. I made a run to the inside of him where Jussi played a great ball in front of me and into the box. I slid, along with the defender, to get an attempt at goal but once again it was deflected for a corner.

However, our first goal would come off of a great counter attack. Kemo picked up a clearance and then found a streaking Jussi. Jussi managed to beat his mark wide and play a great ball back across the box where Kemo finished easily into the side netting. Unfortunately, we kind of lost the plot a bit after the goal. We seemed merely content in kicking the ball away as if we were in the 90th minute.

Tornio gained more and more possession and were beginning to penetrate. They would score after a poor clearance made it only just outside the box in the center of the park. Tornio's midfielder took a settling touch that bounced high, however, he dealt with it remarkably well and volleyed it into the upper corner. After the goal we seemed to gain a bit of composure, and while we didn't create any clear cut chances we were much more calm on the ball.

The half ended 1-1. The second half was a carbon copy of the first. We started well, effectively countering after winning the ball from Tornio. John Keister, who was brought on in the first half, helped stretch the Tornio defense and effectively held up the ball for us along with his strike partner Kemo.

Again off of a quick counter in which Kemo found himself streaking out wide with the ball, I nearly scored. Kemo played a great ball across the top of the box. I ran onto it and struck it sweetly with the inside of my foot. It was destined for the top right corner, but once again was deflected. A few minutes later, however, we would take the lead again. Jan Berg played in a good corner from the right side where Diego got a good head to the ball. It was initially saved but a pouncing Mikko roofed the ball into the top of the net.

It was 2-1, and at the time I felt sure of victory. But once again, we lost composure and allowed Tornio back into the game. Possession became a rarity for us, and we were made to pay. Unfortunately, I have a bit to do with their tying goal. I picked up the ball wide deep in the opposing half. I had the opportunity to immediately cross the ball, but elected to take on my defender. I did brilliantly pulling off Ronaldinho's 'elastico' to beat my Brazilian mark, but rather then take a left footed shot on goal I tried to play the ball back to a streaking midfielder. It was picked off by a defender though, and Tornio countered towards the other end. The ball made its way deep and wide, and their forward managed to pick out a player of his own color despite the fact that there were 3 defenders to one attacker.

I was immediately disappointed with myself. The move was great, looked pretty, but when you're up a goal you can't afford to give away possession the way I did. Had I put in a cross, it may have been cleared by the defense, but it wouldn't have led to a quick counter. Of course, there were others who are at fault as well, but it started with me and I know better then that. Chances were slim after the tying goal. Tornio continued with most of the possession, and while we got better we didn't really carve out any chances. However, we should have been awarded a penalty at the death of the match after John Keister was pulled back in the box. The ref waved play on and then blew the whistle for the end of the match.

I was pulled off in injury time, and I was very happy with my display. It was my first game with a new team, and I definitely caused some problems for the other team. I felt a bit slow, however, which was largely due to the fact that I had not played a 90 minute game at right wing and a long long long time. But to last as long as I did and to make chances and keep the ball was very pleasing for me. Unfortunately, I picked up my 3rd yellow and will miss out on the next game to suspension. Three points is absolutely necessary if we are to avoid the drop.

Life in Joensuu

Life so far has been pretty good here in Joensuu. I can't say the same for the train ride I took to get here. That may be the worst traveling experience I've had. Hardly, the ideal way to begin my new life in Finland. But I must say that since arriving have I have felt very comfortable.

I'm living with Sasha Antilainen one of the players on the team. He's been great to me so far, and I really appreciate the way he has helped me get settled. I've also spent a lot of time with one of the goalkeepers, Lassi, who I have spent some time getting to know the city with. So far we have seemed to hit it off. Both are atypical Finns. Finns by nature are quite shy, but these two are of a different breed, particularly Lassi (well he's a goali, so what do you expect)!

I have trained twice with the team so far. Obviously, there is a drop in quality from RoPS, but there is definitely some talent here. I've been a bit shocked all season at their lowly place in the standings as from what I have seen they are hardly one of the worse teams in this division. I think they've just been a bit unlucky and have been hit with the injury bug a few times too often. And strangely, they have yet to win at home.

Hopefully, that will change this weekend as we take on TP-47. The coach has told me that he will look to play me at right wing. That's fine with me. I like to attack and crossing is probably one of my better attributes. My only fear will be my game fitness. I've only played 1 90 minute game in the last 2 months so I am not too sure how long I can go at a midfield position. That will just be a matter of games though. Once I get 2 or 3 under my belt, I should not have a problem.

The city itself is actually quite beautiful. When I traveled down here with RoPS earlier in the season I had made the same remark to my teammates. The weather hasn't exactly been cooperating although as I write the sunny is shining and while its not warm it is hardly cold. The local University is also just beginning its semester so that means plenty of lovely Finnish women are strolling around.

So overall, my impressions have been good. I feel welcomed and wanted, which is always good for a player. Let's see if I can help the team stay up this year. My prediction is that we will. I think we have the quality its just a matter of gaining a bit of confidence.

Last Post in Rovaniemi

Once again please forgive me for the lack of posting over the last week. Things on my end have been a little hectic as I prepare for a new adventure. This will officially be my last post in Rovaniemi. But don't worry I will continue posting in my new home...Joensuu.

The team in Joensuu, Jippo, has offered to take me on for the rest of the season. They have been interested in me since they saw me play in the Lahti Cup with Atlantis. It was an incredibly difficult decision for me. I've grown to love Rovaniemi, the team, and the fans. It looks as if RoPS is on its way to a championship as well which I would have loved to be a part of. But sometimes you need to think of what's best for you personally.

At my age, I can't afford to be sitting on the bench. For the sake of my career, I need to get as many games and as many minutes on the field as possible throughout the rest of the season. I can accomplish that at Jippo, and hopefully, bring up my level of play to what I am truly capable of. I thank Karo and Mr. Kiistala for the opportunity to play here and for the opportunity to advance my career elsewhere.

To the RoPS fans, you guys have been brilliant. I cannot say enough about the passion you guys have for the team. The display at Kuopio was truly awe-inspiring. I just wish I could have shown you what I am truly capable of. I never came close to the potential I feel I have as a player, and although there were some factors for this, I won't make any excuses. I failed to perform on the field at a level that I expect of myself and for that I am sorry.

Hopefully, in a few weeks time I can come back and really show you how well I can play. Jippo will be traveling up to Rovaniemi for our return match against RoPS, and although it will be difficult to play against my friends here at RoPS I will be doing everything possible to bring a win home to Joensuu. But I truly wish that RoPS will go on to win the league. The team and the fans deserve it for what has so far been an incredible year. Hopefully, you guys can treat me to one more USA or Born in the USA song as well!!

So its been a great ride while it lasted. Goodluck and goodbye Rovaniemi!!

RoPS 2 PP-70 0

Well it was hardly a pretty game of football, but at the end of the day 3 points is 3 points. Thanks to KuPS draw the day before and JJK's draw, we now sit at the top of the table. Yesterday's match was always going to be a bit of a difficult one with the way PP-70 play. There long balls always kept the defence a bit on our heals, and all they looked to do was hope to pick up the second ball.

We started off the match as well as could be expected. We weren't great in possession, but we weren't bad as well. Drogba did well to earn us a penalty, which Dejan Godar put away with a delicate and cheeky chip. PP-70 hardly posed much of a threat except when we managed to gift them chances. They were fairly effective from free kicks, but did nothing to worry us from the run of play. Nonetheless, they did a good job of disrupting our play and keeping us from every really dropping into second gear.

In the second half, we desperately needed a second goal to kill off the match. Our possession really went out the window, and we were caught dribbling way too often. But I would say defensively we were better, and there wasn't really a moment when I thought we might give up the lead. The victory was made certain when Drogba took off on a counter attack 1 v 1 with the goalie. He managed to round the keeper and slot into an empty net in stoppage time to bring home 3 points, and our 9th victory in 10 matches. Drogba has now scored in 10 straight games!!!!

As for my display, I will take it. It's been nearly 2 months since I have gotten a full 90 at right back so for me or anyone else for that matter to expect me to have a blinder is a bit unrealistic. On the ball, I was a bit more nervous then usual and gave away too many balls. But I was very happy with my defensive display with the exception of the silly tackle I made in the first half. With it being my first 90 in a while though, I was satisfied but not thrilled. It is a good game to build off of, and hopefully Thursday I can put a complete game together. I have yet to really show how well I can play and I will look to do that against Tornio. I'll need to if I want to start on Sunday against KuPS as Janne will be back from suspension. But I've always like competition and his competition is most welcome.

Preview- RoPS vs PP-70

After last weeks disappointing result, the team is itching to make amends. Last week saw us throw away a 2-1 lead with about a minute left to play. It was a disappointing result for more then just 1 reason for me, but we'll just leave it at that. It was a bruising affair for us as three players went down (all injured by the same player), and we lost one to a red card although that wasn't made entirely clear at the time.

Despite the result, we have not lost a match in 8 games and Drogba has continued his scoring streak which now stands at 9 games in a row. PP-70 meanwhile have fell on hard times. Results have not gone their way and they now find themselves in th relegation zone. I think I can speak for the whole team when I say we'd like to put them even farther down the table today.

Drogba sat out training for most of the week, but made his return on Friday and will look to play today. Antti Peura is still dealing with his injury as well and will look to come off the bench i believe, and Janne Turpenniemi is suspended for the next 2 matches. I will get the start in Janne's place at right back, and hopefully, I can play as well if not better then he has. It is definitely unfortunate for Janne as I would have reacted to the challenge in the same manner as he did to get himself sent off. Under the circumstance I think the ref needed to have better judgement about the situation. I am of course thrilled to get the start though, and will look to put on a good performance for everyone.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate with us today, and give us a nice night to play some football. I'm predicting a 3-1 victory!!

United draw in Openin Rounds

This is my first post on my beloved team Manchester United. I've been a die hard fan for as long as I can remember supporting football. Eric Cantona was the one that drew me in to the world of the Red Devils. There's only one word that I can think of that adequately describes the way the Old Trafford legend played....Majestic!!

Last season brought a renewed hope in most United fans. The long drout without a Premier League Championship was becoming tiring, and this title definitely gave me hope for the future. After Chelski splashed out their millions upon millions it looked as if no team would be able to match them with their incredible depth. But United prevailed as the team bought into the concept of what United really is, and that is WINNING!!

After this summer's transfer spree, you couldn't help but be optimistic again about United's chances. Adding Nani and Anderson helped to ensure our future, while adding Hargreaves and eventually Tevez definitely made the present that much brighter. But not everything has gone to plan. I have not actually been able to see the matches thus far so I won't comment in too much detail.

United opened with a draw against Reading. Not a completely surprising result, as I had a bad feeling when I first saw the draw. Reading are a tricky side, well coached, and they have 2 Americans. One of these Americans had a blinder as Marcus Hahneman repeatedly denied United's attack in goal. It's not a terrible result, but not exactly the one we were all hoping for. From all accounts, we didn't play badly either but lacked that finishing touch (I'd say we've lacked it ever since Ruud left).

The following Wednesday, United repeated their performance drawing away to Portsmouth. Now I know Portsmouth have been somewhat of a bogey team against us particularly at home, but I can't help but feel incredibly disappointed about this one. They are no where near our league, and after being up a goal we should never have allowed them back in it. And with Chelsea picking up full points from their first 2, this is a disastrous result.

This is United's worse start to the season since the 1998-99 season. Now, of course, we went on to win the treble that season, but there wasn't a Chelsea then to catch up to. What last season most importantly taught us is that we have to start the season well. Giving Chelsea a 4 point lead in the first 2 games definitely makes it an uphill struggle.

And now we face a rejuvinated City team led by Sven Ericksson. City have picked up full points thus far, and have been convincing in doing so. We are also without Rooney (for 2 months!!!) and Ronaldo (who picked up a red card in a head-butting incident against Portsmouth), two players we definitely hate to lose. But the hero today will be Carlos Tevez. I'm predicting a brace for the dynamic Argentinean to lead us inspiringly to victory over the blues!!! Come on you Reds!!!!

Stay Tuned!

Ok, sorry everyone for the lack of posts this week. There's no real explanation for it aside from laziness so I do apologize. Please keep checking the blog as I will be writing several pieces in the next few days and make sure to check out http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/ as I should have another article up for them soon (guess it would be a good time for me to start writing it though!).

I've updated the league table, we now sit second after drawing this weekend against PK-35. I think its better that I don't write a recap of the game, don't really have anything good to say about it so....But look forward to my take on Manchester United's poor start to the season, Tampere United's poor first leg against Rosenborg, the next chapter in my American in Finland journal, and a preview for this weekend's match against PP-70!!

Preview- RoPS vs PK-35

Today's game is another that will have a bit more meaning for me. We take on a, recently, struggling PK-35 side from Helsinki. PK are on a 2 game losing slide, and I have to think that we will make it 3 tonight. We are, of course, on a 7 game winning streak and top of the league so there is nothing but confidence in our side at the moment. But PK did hand us our first defeat at the beginning of the season so they are not to be taken lightly.

But there are several sidenotes that make this an interesting game for me. I will be up against two other American players today. Matt McKenna is PK's longtime goalkeeper, and probably one of the better ones in the league. In our first match, he was brilliant. PK also has in its ranks, American midfielder/forward Peter Louis. Thus far Peter has 2 goals on the season, but I don't think he has really solidified himself in the team. Nonetheless, I will definitely want to get a victory over my American counterparts to make things even.

PK also have several of my former teammates from Atlantis as well as my former coach. Pasi Pihaama joined the PK staff at the same time I left, and even tried to bring me along with him. I wouldn't have minded staying in Helsinki, but the moment I saw the talent we have here in Rovaniemi I knew the team I wanted to play for. But I do have a ton of respect for my old coach. In fact, he is one of my favorite coaches that I have had. PK also have Atlantis defectees Miika Jokipera, Lauri Hakanen, and Tony Kaukoma so it will be good to see my old friends again.

The man we need to concern ourselves with is Peteri Kaijasilta, however. 'Kai' has slowed down since his storming goalscoring run at the beginning of the season, but he is as dangerous as ever. We will need to make sure to limit his chances. All he needs is one chance so we need to be aware. Other then that PK are really not too much of a threat. They are very organized in the back and will play a 5-3-2. There outside backs are strong players and like to push forward, but honestly I don't see them giving us too much trouble if we play like we can.

Drogba will look to continue his scoring streak, and the team will welcome back George into the lineup. One goal could win this game so I'm going to predict a 1-0 victory for the home side!!!

Becks Finally Makes Debut

So if you didn't catch it, on Thursday David Beckham finally made his long awaited debut in a 1-0 loss to DC United. With flash bulbs going off across the stadium, Beckham patiently waited for Quavas Kirk to trot to the sideline to be replaced with the LA Galaxy down a man, down 1-0, and only 18 minutes left. The perfect fairy tale story was being set up...Becks trots onto the field instantly taking over the game and delivering a magical performance to lead the Galaxy to a come from behind victory.

But that wasn't quite the way it turned out. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining affair with one moment of brilliance from Beckham as he picked out Landon Donovan with a pass who was then taken out by the DC goalkeeper, Troy Perkins. Whether or not it was a penalty is still up for debate, but it was a pass few others in the MLS could have made.

I was able to catch the ESPN broadcast (for my Finnish readers that are unaware, ESPN is the major sports broadcaster in the US), and as a football purist was left slightly disgusted. Nearly 2/3rds of the commentary and 2/3rds of video that came through my computer were of David Beckham, tying his shoes, going to warm up, sitting back down on the bench and then repeating the process. And then in on ESPN's highlight show the day after, they didn't offer a single highlight from the game aside from Beckham.

Now trust me I'm not trying to belittle what David Beckham means to the MLS. I understand it fully, in fact. Rarely, do football highlights or people make the news, but on a daily basis now Beckham and subsequently MLS pop up. He's on been on culture and fashion shows, and out-right anti-football journalists (of which there are many in the US, not quite sure what they are so afraid of) have even payed some attention. It really is amazing how much exposure the MLS received because of David before he had even stepped on a pitch.

My problem lays with the incessant need to constantly have a camera on him while there is some good football beig played. DC United's Bobby Boswell, who I have spent time playing with and against, has put it best. (this is a link to his blog where you can read, and if you have the time, browse around a bit. It really is a hilarious blog giving you insights into the DC United organization and players that you wouldn't find anywhere else). But he's right- all those that watched the ESPN highlight show found out was that Beckham played! Yes, of course, get some camera time on David because that's what the non-football fans want to see, but why not throw in some highlights from the actual game in which there was some fantastic stuff.

Now, I personally believe Beckham will be a hit. He largely already is a hit in the US. In fact, there's no one in the US sporting world that can garner attention like Beckham can, and that's quite a statement considering the loads of talent in the US in other sports. But you don't see Kobe Bryant or LeBron James hounded by paparazzi, featured on fashion and Hollywood shows like E!. But David Beckham can come into a world where football is probably 4th on the list as concerns professional sports, and yet grab more attention then any other athlete in the US!! Now that is a feat in itself!!

As a side note, Beckham was also seen in the DC club, Play (awesome club, Onnela and Doris should send a representative to take a few notes. For my US readers those are the two bigger clubs here in Rovaniemi) after the match along with teammate Cobi Jones. In fact, Becks and Cobi seemed to have hit it off really well. The two were also seen grabbing coffee from Starbucks before the match, and are always chatting it up on the bench during Galaxy games.

The LA Galaxy's next match is today, and I'm not sure what the verdict will be for Beckham concerning playing time. It's only been 2 days since his last match (granted he only played 18 minutes), but I assume it will depend on how his ankle reacted and then recovered. I can't imagine him not playing, but I do wonder if he will get more time on the field.

Another U20 Yank Crosses the Pond

US U20 midfielder, Danny Szetela, is rumoured to be set to sign a contract with Italian powerhouse AC Roma. The combative midfielder had attracted the likes of Galatasaray, Everton, Middlesbrough, Parma, and Rangers as well, has been keen for a move to Europe for some time after the conclusion of the U20 WC in Canada.

Danny won't actually join up with the Romans until after his contract expires with the MLS December 31st of this year. It ends what has been an injury riddled four years with the Columbus Crew, a club he was never to happy about joining in the first place. Since coming back from Canada though, Danny has been given a starting role in the last few games with the Crew, but with MLS stalling in offering a new contract, can you blame him for jumping the great divide?

I can't see Danny getting too much first team minutes with Roma barring injury from some of their players. It may be that he is loaned out to a Serie B club, or that he plays with Roma's primaverra squad. Regardless, I like the move for a very promising future US midfielder.

Danny joins Sal Zizzo and Freddy Adu from the U20 squad to have signed in Europe. Freddy signed with Benfica and Zizzo has signed with Hannover 96.

RoPS 3 Klubi04 1

Last night's game was a big improvement from last week, and more importantly continued our winning streak which now stands at 7 games. Seven games on the trot really is quite an achievement for us. In general, any team can beat any team on any given day in this league as well as in the Veikkausliiga. While, of course, you will have the dominant teams like Tampere United in the Veikkausliiga, you don't generally see a team go on a run such as ours without dropping points here and there.

We started the match strong, and quickly took advantage of Klubi's nervousness. They fielded an extremely young team, and I don't believe they used any players from HJK which was a bit of a surprise. HJK do play today so that was probably the reasoning, but still I was expecting to see at least 1 or 2 of the fringe players. Our first goal was scored in the first 5 minutes or so. After some good build up, Drogba cut into the middle, quickly played the ball to a streaking Majava who then quickly played it to Peura who was advancing from his wing position. Penna made no mistake with his effort from inside the box as he blasted a shot into the side netting.

I was fairly confident that the match would turn into a blowout with the way it started, and especially as Klubi were definitely unsettled from the start. But we quickly gave them a confidence boost, as their captain put home a penalty. Antii Uimaniemi rather uncharacteristically gave away a poor ball in our defensive end, and in trying to recover took down their player in the box. With the score now tied, and with Klubi now given a bit of life and a lot of confidence the match was made much more difficult for us.

Later in the first half though, Janne Turpeeniemi, collected a clearance from our corner kick and played a great ball over the top to Dejan Godar. Godar's first touch was sublime, and he was then able to pick out Drogba who easily placed the ball in the net to continue his remarkable scoring streak. He has now scored in 8 straight games. I'm not sure I've ever heard of anyone at any level with such a streak!

The half closed with the score at 2-1. The second half was much the same as the first. Klubi rarely threatened our goal, but still made it difficult for us at times. However, we controlled most of the match and would put the game away with a third goal and Drogba's second of the match. Majava would turn provider again as he collected a ball wide and played a delicate chip inside the box to Drogba who acrobatically was able to get a foot on the ball and deflect into the net.

I entered in the 77th minute to help kill off the match. With the exception of 2 giveaways which resulted from miscommunication with Drogba and I, I was fairly solid I would say. I will definitely take this performance over my last. The match would end 3-1 putting us at the top of the table after JJK slipped up against Jippo. In fact, the only team to keep pace with us was KuPS who ran out 4-0 winners over VIFK. PK-35 lost pace with us as they fell to TP-47, and TPV fell hard to GBK 4-0.

With 3 more home games in a row still to play, hopefully we can add a little more distance between us and KuPS before we face off against each other. I have a feeling that match with KuPS could be huge in deciding who wins the league. I would be happy with a draw in that match seeing as it is an away match for us, especially if we pick up full points from our next 3 games. Of course, I would much rather prefer a big win over them, and really put some distance between us.

The fans were much improved as well from last week. You guys were great once again, and I know the team appreciates it. And I definitely love the 'Born in the USA' song when I got into the match! Hope you guys enjoyed the victory as much as we did!!

Preview- RoPS vs Klubi04

We play bottom-dwellers Klubi04 today; however, we are not expecting an easy task. Klubi04, the reserve side for Veikkausliiga team HJK, has struggled this season, gaining only 6 points thus far. However, despite their lack of success they are an extremely talented and quick bunch.

The team is comprised mainly of promising 17, 18, and 19 year olds along a few fringe players from HJK. Quick and very skilled on the ball, they do pose a threat. In fact, of all the teams we have played, they probably play the most attractive brand of football. However, their lack of experience has killed them in a number of games. They have only lost 2 games by more then 1 goal, with several of those goals coming at the end of the match. They will no doubt try to kickstart their season today, and there would be no better time to do it then against the joint first place team, RoPS.

We are on a 6 game winning streak, and although we hardly played our best last week against Hameenlinna, we are playing extremely well overall. Drogba is on a 7 game scoring streak and will look to continue that run. We have also kept 2 clean sheets in a row, and although Chilufya will again be missing due to injury, I think we have a strong chance of getting a 3rd in a row. Chileshi Chibwe will also be missing today, due to yellow card accumulation.

It should definitely be an attractive game for all involved. Both sides like to keep the ball on the ground and both have good team speed. However, with our experience and our current stretch of form, I cannot see us dropping any points here. I'm expecting a 2-0 win. Enjoy for all those that will be attending!

Saunas, Snow, and Jalkapallo- An American in Finland Part 2

Continued from Part 1

My yearning for home quickly dissipated as the excitement of being in a new country with a fresh challenge ahead swepped over me. This was a big move. I spent a lot of money to come all the way out here to chase my dream, and I needed it to pay off.

Mikko Sivonen met me at the airport. He and his family are missionaries with the International Missions Board from the US. Before I came out, I had gotten in touch with them in the hopes of helping out when I was free from football. He was gracious enough to offer me a place to stay. I owe him and his family a great debt of gratitude, and he has become one of my closest friends.

That first day went by pretty quickly. I was not too jetlagged yet, and I actually found the energy to join Mikko in a game of floor hockey with his friends. Let me tell you, my future in floor hockey is not near as bright as my future in football (come to think of it, I'm not exactly sure how bright my future in football is, haha). I even managed to sleep fine that first night.

The following day I got a brief tour of Helsinki, although it was incredibly cold at -10 C. Later in the afternoon, I would have my first training session with Atlantis FC. It would certainly be a nice test for me. I had never played outdoors in weather like this before so it was definitely interesting. Some jetlag also began to creep in, and midway through the training session, I really felt myself getting tired.

But I managed to hold my own, and performed much better then I anticipated for my first session. In fact, I had done so well that they had already begun talking about a contract, although nothing concrete was offered. I continued training that week with the team, putting in some solid performances despite the increasing lack of sleep. The 8 hour time difference was really starting to wear on me.

The real test of the this trial came on the following Saturday. I would face my first match in Finland against Veikkausliiga side Viikingit. I began the game at left back, although I was told that I would probably move forward into one of the wing forward positions in a 4-3-3 system at some point.

That point came a bit quicker then I anticipated, however. We went down 1-0 about 15 minutes in. Unfortunately, I was outjumped to a cross and the opposing player was able to head the ball in. Soon after I was moved forward, and really started playing some good football. My movement off the ball seemed to create a bit of havoc in the Viikingit defense, and holes were opening up. I managed to find one of those holes just before half time, as a ball was played through for me. I managed to win the race to the ball with the goalkeeper and easily placed the ball into an open net. It came at a cost, however, as the goalkeeper bundled into me and I straiend my groin.

I started the second half despite the strain, but only managed about 10 minutes when the coach felt it was better for me to take it easy. We managed to tie the game 2-2, and after the match I was offered a contract. It was an incredible relief, and I felt a great sense of pride at achieving my goal so quickly.

As for my first reaction to Finnish football, it really wasn't too much different then what I was used to. The pace of the game was a little quicker and it was more physical then in the US, and in the US I would say that it is a bit more technical, but nothing so durastic as to make a huge difference. It was quite similar and I fit into the role quite easily. This game was played with the ball on the ground, which was a bit shocking to me. I was expecting a bit more of a direct style (This is actually particularly strange because Viikingit is probably one of the more direct teams in the Veikkausliiga). But it was certainly a welcome shock as I prefer nice, tidy, quick football rather then long ball as I tend to struggle sometimes with balls in the air.

There was a minimal crowd at the game, but that wasn't disheartening as it was hardly advertised and it was still very early in preseason. My first taste of a real crowd would come a few weeks later at the Lahti Cup.

RoPS 1 Hameenlinna 0

It was hardly our best performance today, but 3 points is 3 points and we'll take it. We definitely lacked the killer instinct to put the game way earlier and made it more difficult for ourselves then we should have. 'Drogba' continued his amazing scoring run as he put in a fantastic header from an awkward angle from a Zeddy Saileti cross in the first half. It was really a class goal, and it seems everything he does seems to go right, which is great for us.

Hameenlinna was even more direct today then I remember from preseason. Every pass was a long ball, and that can be difficult especially when you let the team hang around. We had a several other opportunities in the second half to kill the game, but unfortunately we couldn't get that killer goal. Hameenlinna never truly threatened though despite the fact that we gave away some silly fouls in dangerous spots.

I entered the game with about 15-10 minutes left, and I really left a lot to be desired. It was not the performance I wanted, and I should have done much better on a few occasions. It is of course difficult to make an impact with only 10 minutes left, but that should be no excuse for me. I need to do more if I expect to get more time.

In the end, it was 3 valuable points as table leaders KuPS were crushed by JJK. We now sit tied for first place with JJK but second due to goal differential. We'll take it of course, and with 4 more home games in a row remaining I think by the end of these 4 games we will be top. Thanks to everyone that made it out today. The fans were a little quieter today then usual, although we didn't exactly give you guys too much to cheer about. Thanks for the shouts to put me in the match. I just wish I could have done better for you guys!

Preview- RoPS vs Hameenlinna

It's a very big match for us despite the difference in the table. What makes this week important is that KuPS and JJK square off against one another giving us the opportunity to potentially take over first place. It's still early in the season of course as we have just now reached the half way mark, but with 4 home games in a row remaining for us, if we can manage to grab the top spot we may never look back and hopefully continue on to promotion.

Hameenlinna have been a bit of a Jeckyl and Hide (ok I think that's spelled wrong but oh well). They started off the season rough, but have rebounded here and there with some good performances, particularly in last weeks 4-0 win of GBK. I have played them twice in preseason when I was with Atlantis and they were far from impressive. But they are very well organized in the back and can be difficult to break down. Going forward, they rely on the long ball generally as well as their left winger who is probably the best player on the team.

We, of course, are coming off a 5 game winning streak and confidence is very high. George Chilufya is out with a hamstring strain, so Dejan Godar will drop back from his midfield position. 'Drogba' has also been sick for most of the week, but he seemed fine this morning and is going to try and give it a go today. I believe I will start on the bench today, but I'm not 100% certain. I should, hopefully, see some decent time today as I've been especially good in training this week. Over the last 4 weeks I have felt stronger and stronger, and I have really started to consistently put in good performances in training. Now that I am more comfortable with my surroundings here, I think it is really helping me to play better and more consistent. It was a challenge getting used to living here at first, but now I am really starting to enjoy myself here.

I'm predicting a 1-0 or 2-1 victory for us as well for our fans to be outstanding once again! Thanks for the support guys!! I know the team and I appreciate it!!

Saunas, Snow, and Jalkapallo- An American in Finland

Well I know some of you Stateside were interested in the football culture over here in Finland and some people in Finland have been interested in how exactly I ended up here so I have decided to create this journal of sorts, chronicling my venture here in Finland. Here is my first installment. Enjoy...

Aaah, the allure of European football. It draws the attention of the entire footballing world, and- whether you admit it or not- is the goal of 95% of footballers. That’s what drew me to this place. That’s what caused me to leave my home, family, friends, and everything I was accustomed to. It was this allure that I was even willing to venture into a land where football wasn’t even the number 1 sport and spends a considerable amount of time covered in snow and ice.

But this is Europe. There should still be thousands flocking to the stadiums, singing (or cursing) my name in full voice as I jet down the sideline, who would die for their local team…right?

Well, first let’s start off a few years back. I spent 4 years playing at Liberty University a division 1 program in Lynchburg, Virginia. Most of you would know the University by its founder and now late Jerry Falwell (a man that I respect and will miss greatly…say what you want about him, but he was a visionary and a great man of God). I had a decent college career, earning all-conference honors in my senior year. However, I was hardly on the radar of any MLS team come draft day.

Following my 4th year, I did what most players do that weren’t drafted into the MLS. I shelled out a good bit of money, racked up a good bit of mileage on my car in the hope of standing out among at least 40 or so other players at open try-outs with the same goal- to earn a contract with a professional soccer team.

After attending a few open try-outs, I had several USL couple of teams interested- Harrisburg City Islanders and the Cincinnati Kings. I opted to sign for the Kings because I had a lot of family in the area (not in Cincinnati, across the river in Kentucky). It was definitely an awesome feeling to achieve a goal I had dreamed about since I was 4. Of course, I was hardly satisfied and definitely wanted to reach a higher level. I didn't exactly enjoy my time in Cincinnati though do to some off-field problems I ran into do to my own stupidity. But, nevertheless, it was a great experience to get my feet wet in the world of professiona football.

But was this it? Was this what I had spent years killing myself on the field, dreaming about every night since I was a boy- to spend my final years of playing traveling 13 hours on a bus, playing back to back days, playing in high school or college stadiums, earning scraps?

Now, I’m not trying to knock USL. They provide an excellent service to players like me and others with the dream of playing professional football. In fact, there are many that earn a very good living from USL so it is certainly a viable alternative, and I can easily see myself playing in it again…But it’s just not Europe.

So after a bit of networking, and despite having some interest from the newly founded Carolina Railhawks after an open tryout, I managed to secure a trial in Helsinki, Finland with Atlantis FC. Now I know what you are thinking…why Finland?! Well beggars can’t be choosers my friend, and I was willing to go anywhere. But as my plane approached the runway in Helsinki, I knew I had no idea what I was in for. I had just spent a little over a month at home in Texas for the holidays. It was 70 degrees Fahrenheit when I left. When I landed in Helsinki, it was -10 degrees Celsius with a fresh blanket of snow covering everything I could see.

I’m not sure why it was a shock. I knew that Finland is generally pretty cold in the winter. I knew that there would probably be snow. I mean... I had even spent 3 months training with teams in Oslo the year before (it was summer though). But for some reason, as I looked out of the window of the plane as we landed, my jaw dropped and suddenly, I wanted nothing more than to be back in sunny, warm Texas.

Zizzo inks German deal

Sal Zizzo who recently came off an impressive display for the US at the U20 WC has just signed a contract with German Bundesliga side, Hannover 96. The fomer UCLA winger will be joining with his new squad next week.

Hannover already employs 1 other American player- Steve Cherundolo. Interestingly, both Cherundolo and Zizzo are from San Diego, CA are both Italian-Americans, and now will both be playing for the same club. In fact, Cherundolo was very influential in persuading Zizzo and his family to sign for the Reds.

Zizzo is the first of his US U20 team to sign a European contract following the WC. Adu is expected to sign soon hopefully as well. Rumors are also flying around about Danny Szetela.

Adu to Benfica on hold

There are reports that the MLS (who owns Adu's contract) and Benfica have reached a transfer fee agreement for young Freddy Adu. However, it now appears that negotiations have Adu and Benfica have yet to reach personal terms.

This is certainly not what I expected. Adu doesn't have to much leverage here, and could be jeopardizing his European desires. It is unknown whether Adu is holding out for more money or something else, but hopefully this will get resolved soon. Benfica could be the ideal place for him to get his career jumpstarted!

Adu to Benfica?

Soccer by Ives is reporting that Freddy Adu is close to joining Portuguese champions, Benfica. The team has reportedly already made a $2.5 million bid which was rejected by the MLS who is holding out for a figure around $7.5 million.

I think this could be a very good step for the young phenom. The Portuguese league will fit his style, and will also give him the chance to see what he has against Champions League opponents. Adu definitley needs a change of scenery, and I doubt he'll not enjoy what Portugal has to offer.

RoPS 2 Atlantis 0

Our winning streak is moved to 6 games in a row with 5 more home games in a row still to play. We are playing some sublime football at times, and the confidence in the squad is very high. The first half was a little bit of a chess match for us. Atlantis was relatively organized in the back, and we seemed to be trying to figure out how to break them down. Atlantis held their own as well although I can't remember them every truly threatening our goal. The African striker Muwahid Sesay did cause us some problems with his strength and pace, but nothing ever came from it.

The second half began much the same. I would say that we controlled the game, but we had not found a clear cut opportunity in front of goal. About half way through the half, Jusso Majava picked up a ball at midfield and played a great ball across the field to Dejan Godar who had made a run out of midfield. Dejan took on his defender and after a step-over move managed to get position on his mark before being taken down in the box. Chanda Mwaba stepped up for the penalty and sent the Atlantis keeper, Unisa Bangura, the wrong way to put us up 1-0.

We did a good job of killing off the match. Controlling possession well and keeping them to mere half-chances. But late in the match, 'Drogba' scored from an amazing bicycle kick to put the game away 2-0. It was a good win for us, and getting the shutout was important as well. It was nice to not have to come from behind. I, unfortunately, did not see the pitch and although that is of course disappointing (especially as it was my old team) the important thing was that we won and took home 3 points at the end of the day.

In the other important matches, PK-35 lost pace with leaders with a 4-1 loss to PP-70, KuPS defeated TP-47 1-0, and JJK defeated Klubi-04 2-1.

Preview- RoPS vs Atlantis

Sorry to anyone that regularly reads this blog. I've been a bit lazy posting this week, but please keep coming back. I'll be updating more regularly for now on.

On to today's match. We play Atlantis FC from Helsinki at 6:30 tonight. As I mentioned in my last post, this match holds a special meaning for me. Atlantis was the team I originally signed for when I moved to Finland, however, after some financial problems I moved to RoPS- a move I can definitely say has been better as far as football is concerned.

Atlantis comes into today's match after a 2-2 draw with Hameenlinna. The team is a bit different since I have left. Along with me, 3 other players and the head coach left the squad so they do have a bit of a different look then when I was with them. Regardless, they have several talented individuals that will pose a threat. From what I have heard they have yet to really play well as a team, but that doesn't mean their individuals can't hurt us.

Jani Modig will be the one for us to watch today. Although, he is just coming back from a lengthy injury, the attacking midfielder will most likely pull the strings for them. He is a very technical and smart player. We will also have to look out for Sierra Leonean, Muwahid Sessay. The left footer is very technical and has been scoring as of late for them.

In the back, they are lead by Tomi Nyman who is back from Holland where he was playing for second division side Omniworld. Before moving to Holland, Tomi played regularly with FC Honka. Good in the air and sound with the ball, he will look to stop our 'Drogba.' Goodluck with that though Tomi, as 'Drogba' has been unstoppable in the last 5 games.

But we are far from intimidated. As I have said all year, we have the most talented team in the Ykkonen, and if we play like we can we should leave with a victory. Chanda Mwaba is back from suspension to add more depth to the squad, and will take his usual spot in central midfield. I will begin the game from the bench, and hopefully get the opportunity to contribute later in the match. I would love to put on past my old team!!

Enjoy the match for those that will be in attendance!

RoPS 2 JJK 1

It was a good win for our side yesterday. We played well for most of the match, but as usual we didn't really start playing with a lot of purpose until going down a goal. The first half ended 0-0 with neither team carving out any clear-cut chances.

The second half began much the same as the first with both teams trading possession. JJK would score first though after a free kick was given up. The ball would be swung in by Tommi Kari to the back corner of the 6 yard box where Babatunde Wusu had lost his mark to easily head into the net. RoPS responded well, however and immediately equalized through a well taken goal from 'Drogba.' After picking up the ball near the opposing teams box, Drogba placed his shot to the near post around the diving goalkeeper.

After netting the equalizer, RoPS definitely looked the better side and it was only a matter of time before the winner came. Young Jusso Majava, who had replaced Antii Peura, was picked out in the box by a Chileshi Chibwe pass, and after a nice cut back the young player slotted the ball in the net with a left footed drive.

I would enter the game with 7 minutes left to help close off the match. I came in at left wing for Jarno Koivisto, and I did my job I felt. Nothing too exciting or flashy from me, and there was no reason to be. With a 2-1 lead with less then 10 minutes, I concentrated on keeping the ball for us and doing what I could defensively.

In the end it was a very good, very big win for us. With the other results (KuPS tied TPV and PK-35 beat VIFK) its now even tighter at the top. KuPS and PK-35 sit on top with 23 points while JJK and us sit on 21 points.

Next week, Helsinki side Atlantis visits. It will be a bit of a special match for me. When I arrived in Finland, I had originally signed a contract with Atlantis. However, after the club suffered some financial problems (again) and could not guarantee my salary I was forced to find a new club (the best club in the Ykkonen!!). But I love the guys from Atlantis. They were/are good friends of mine so it should be a fun match for me!

Preview- RoPS vs JJK

Today's match against JJK is definitely one of the bigger matches of the season. JJK is currently 3 points above us in second place, 1 point behind leaders KuPS. Their only loss thus far came at the hands of Helsinki side, PK-35. JJK also have a potent strike force with Tomi Kari and Babatunde Wusu scoring 17 of their side's 20 goals this season. In fact, last week Wusu scored 4 second half goals in a 5-1 demolition of PP-70.

We are heading into the match with a stretch of good form with 3 wins in our last 3 games. We have also trailed in each of these 3 games before storming back for victories. Our strikers are also on a scoring tear. Nchmunya Mweetwa, 'Drogba', has scored 1 goal in each of the last 4 games, and RoPS legend, Zeddy Sailetti, now has 5 goals on the year.

So it would be wise to expect a very offensive game. JJK, however, may still be tired from their extra time victory over Veikkausliiga side MyPa in the Finnish Cup. Add to that a long bus ride to Rovaniemi, and it might be cause for some tired and weary legs. Regardless, we are definitely up for the game. There's no fear in the side at all, and their shouldn't be. We probalby have the most talented team in the Ykkonen, and in the end its just a game of football, and as we saw last night in the US vs Austria U20 WC quarter-final- anything can happen in football.

I believe I will be starting from the bench, which will again be a disappointment for me. But I will be ready to play when called on, and hopefully I can make an impact like I did in the last game. Hopefully, we'll also have a really good turnout. It should be a really entertaining game, and it would be awesome to have a full stadium. Either way, our fans are great and I know they will be their usual, loud selves!!

US U20's bow out

It's really hard for me to know exactly what to say. I feel for the boys, I really do. Credit to Austria, who are deserved winners though. The second half offered little from the US. They were unable to string together any effective counters as they had in the first. Adu and Altidore went missing for large chunks.

Austria on the other hand came out with much greater purpose and belief. Okotie caused us problems the entire night. About midway through the second half Beltran was replaced for Tim Ward. A horrible sub in my opinion. That was a sub to not lose the game rather then a sub to win the game. And Ward didn't look any better then he did against South Korea. An absolutely terrible showing all around from the fullback.

Starting extra time, however, the US looked bright and should have scord twice in the opening period. Rogers did very well to get by his mark down the endline and sent in a floating ball to the back post. Zizzo, however, rather then go for goal headed the ball back acrossed the box where it was easily cleared. I don't know what exactly he was thinking as Zizzo had a lot of the goal to look at. Moments later Freddy Adu made a nice run through the Austrian defence and after collecting the pass decided to round the keeper rather then shoot. His touch led him too far, however, and his shot from a difficult angle didn't find the net.

After those two misses, I really had a bad feeling about the game. It just felt like the US couldn't get things to fall there way, and they were made to pay for it. As the first extra time period came to a close, Anthony Wallace made a rash and very unneeded tackle near the half-line. The ref had little choice, but to show 'Wally' his second yellow of the match. From the resulting free kick, Okotie managed to get his head to it. The ball flicked to the back post where an unnoticed hand ball by Michael Bradley kept the ball in the danger zone. Two failed clearances and a last second lunge by substitute Hoffer found the ball rolling into the US net.

The US applied pressure onto the Austrian defence for the remainder of the match. Austria did counter effectively once after a cleared free kick led to a 2 on 1 (Seitz) where the Austrian player struck the upright. The US would get 2 more quality chances, but rather then play the ball across the box, Altidore and Adu went for glory and found their shots saved for corners.

And that was all she wrote, as Austria came out victors 2-1 over a devastated US.

Player Evals-
Seitz- 4.5- I feel bad for the kid. He will probably put a lot of the blame on himself for giving up the rebound that led to the tying goal. But Rongen should never have played him. He struggled through the match with his injury.

Beltran-4.5- Didn't really do too much right today. Defensively he was beat several times, and he was quite poor on the ball

Valentin- 6.0- The best defender on the night. Defended very well and was much better on the ball then he has been lately.

Sturgis- 5.5- I think Sturgis will be slightly disappointed with his overall performance throughout the tournament. Gave away the ball a few times in some dangerous areas. Defensively was ok, but I think many of us expected more from him.

Wallace 4.5- A very poor tackle to get himself sent off. Was caught out of position several times, although he was able to get himself back into the play with his athleticism. Distribution was off.

Bradley- 7.0- Best player on the field for the US. Fantastic work on the defensive side of the ball. A very solid all around game from the Herenveen midfielder.

Szetela- 5.5- An ok match I guess. Ok defensively and got himself in some decent positions a few times on the other side of the ball. Once again though, he was a little too careless in possession.

Zizzo- 5.0- Went unnoticed for large stretches. Didn't really do anything wrong, but didn't do anything right either. Pretty much a non-factor, and he should have scored in extra time

Rogers-5.5- I'm sure some will disagree with this eval. But lets be honest, for all the good work he did to get by his mark what did it accomplish? Only 1 good ball across the box that I can remember. Also slowed the attack on numerous occasions. 3 out of 5 times, he has no idea what he wants to do with the ball when he gets it, which is the reason for his numerous turnovers in games past, and for slowing the play down today.

Adu 6.5- Played with a lot of heart, and did all he could to spur the US on. Some very very nice moments, although occasionally tried to be too tricky. In the second half, he got lost in the match though. Extra time performance was very good, but way way to selfish on his chance near the end to go for goal rather then playing it across the box to a teammate.

Altidore- 6.0- Scored the lone US goal from a great ball by Adu. Great header to finish. But his touch let him down several times when we needed him to hold the ball up. Yes, I realize he was under pressure and had a tough job with a very physical Austrian defense. But, guess what...that's his job and at times didn't do it well enough.

Subs
McCarty- 5.0- Did a few things well, but not well enough. Took to long to adjust to the pace of the match, and gave away the ball in some bad spots because of it. Once he adjusted he did better, but really not good enough.

Ward 2.0- Terrible. Did nothing right.

Ferrari- Not much time to make an impact.

Man, this sucks. Austria....Austria is the team to knock us out! No disrespect to them, but come on. This should never have happened!

HT- US U20 vs Austria U20

The half came to a close with the scores knotted at 1 a piece. The US started off and played most of the half as the brighter of the two sides. Devastating at times on the counter-attack, the US's speed seemed to be causing the Austrians all sorts of trouble. Deservedly, the US went up 1-0 after Freddy Adu found space outwide. His sublime cross met, Jozy Altidore where the youg forward scored his 4th goal of the tournament.

The US seemed to almost go on cruise-control from there. The Austrians rarely threatened until the end of the half. The US on the other hand created a few half-chances, but really lacked the intensity for a quarter-final of a World Cup. They definitely seemed to ease off the gas rather then going for the juggular after scoring the first.

Austria, however, woke up with about 15 minutes left to go. A long range shot was saved by a diving Chris Seitz who did equally well on the rebound. However, Seitz did appear to be a bit slow on both saves, and I do not think he is fully fit (actually I know he is not fully fit as he isn't taking the goal kicks). With about 5 minutes left to go, another long range effort caused problems for Seitz who spilled the ball and after a brief scramble was put in the net by Austrian striker Okotie.

A few quick notes on some players. Valentin who I was very unhappy with in the last match (actually all tournament) has done very well on the defensive side of things. Rogers has also done much better, but still needs to find a final ball for all of the good work he does beforehand. Adu once again has been breathtaking at times, but I would like to see him cut out a trick or two. I certainly don't want him to quit being creative, but he seems to be trying too much now.

Well, its a brand new game now. Lets see who can take a hold of the momentum he and get the winner

Preview- US U20's vs Austria U20's

Well we're just under 3 hours before kick off...well I think just under 3, hopefully I have my time conversions correct. The US's next task in this U20 World Cup is the alpine republic of Austria, who overcame Gambia 2-1 to earn their date with the US. The US comes off a gritty performance against Uruguay coming back from 1-0 down with under 15 minutes to play to win 2-1 in overtime off of a Michael Bradley goal.

Austria came out as the runner-up in their group of Chile, Canada, and Congo. The Europeans began their venture with a tie against Congo, then another tie against a very strong Chilean side, and finally a victory over the hosts Canada. I've not seen them play personally, but from everything I have heard they appear to be another typical central European team- organized, tactical, athletic. They will be lead by leading scorer Erwin Hoffer, who hopped off the bench to score the game winner against Gambia, and Rubin Okotie son of a Nigerian father and Austrian mother.

I have to like the young 'Nat's chances though. They've already played one other central European nation, Poland, which they easily disposed of. Poland and Austria I imagine play very similarly. The US's athletic ability will easily match themselves up with their counterparts, they have been tactically astute all tournament, have shown the ability to play some incredible football, and as seen against Uruguay, have the heart and grit to battle out a win as well. All of these combined, I believe will make for an American victory.

If Freddy, Jozy (who appears to have recovered), Seitz (who appears to have recovered as well) and Co. show up to play, I can't see the Austrians providing too much of a problem. But this is football, and stranger things have happened. The US can't afford to take them lightly, and need to match the Austrians off the starting blocks.

Final Thoughts- US U20's vs Uruguay U20's

Ok..definitely not the nicest football displayed tonight, but anyone that has ever played the game knows that it doesn't always go that way. Too expect the US to continue at the high level they played against Poland and Brazil is a little unrealistic. They are bound to drop and then rise, the key is having more rises then falls. I was going to give player evals, but its difficult on this game. No one played particularly well, and at the same time its difficult to fault them. It's just the way the game went. The pace of the match was frantic, and it showed in the play.

I will make comments on a few players though. I would much rather have Oforie Sarkodie playing alongside Nate Sturgis then Valentin. Valentin has been repeatedly abused for his lack of pace, in every game so far. His passing also leaves a lot to be desired at times. Sarkodie on the other hand played very well against Poland and Brazil. His athleticism makes him much more effective and much less susceptible to being beat.

I'm also not big on Robby Rogers. I'm sorry, I just don't get the buzz that some people have on him. Yes, he's done some good things and put in some good crosses, but my word he loses the ball a lot. And I mean A LOT! It also appears to me that if he does beat a man, he does it rather clumsily. It must be maddening defending him because every ricochet seems to bounce right for him. Now perhaps thats his particular skill, and its also true we don't exactly have anyone to replace him. But I just can't get over the amount of times he loses the ball. It really does negate a lot of the good things he does in my eyes.

My last comment on the players will be on Gabe Ferrari. I really liked what I saw from him. He didn't really do anything fancy, and didn't have any chances at goal, but he was excellent in holding the ball up for us. I would have much rather had him come on for Jozy initially rather than Akpan. It was always going to be difficult for Ferrari coming into a match like that, so I can't fault him too much for not carving out a chance. But to get the starting nod that's what you need to do. It's a difficult job, yes, but he if he could have carved out a chance or two he really could have made a shout for the starting job on Saturday if Jozy can't go. (Personally, I would rather see him then Akpan if Jozy can't go).

Now, as for the team, despite the lack of attractive football, I was glad to see their fight. The chips weren't falling there way, but the team never gave up and you just knew once they got the equalizer they would go on to win it. That's the sign of a great team. They can get the result even when things aren't going well.

Next up....Austria and I have to like our chances. Let's put on a better display this time though boys. Try to make it easier on my nerves for me!

FT- Still Ugly

Well the game certainly hasn't gotten any prettier, but thanks to a gritty US side we are headed to extra time. Uruguay took the lead right around the 75th minute mark after the US side failed to clear successfully. A bouncing ball near the endline was hooked into the center of the box, where it was headed toward goal by Uruguayan striker. It was well saved by Perk, but he gave up a rebound and a ball watching Valentin couldn't manage to reach the ball first as Suarez easily placed the ball in the back of the net.

However, the US responded with about 3 minutes remaining. A corner kick swung in by Adu was kept alive by Danny Szetela who then played a ball across the box. With Andre Akpan, who subbed on for the injured Josmer Altidore, pressuring it was bundled into the back of the net by a sliding Uruguayan defender.

Two substitutions have definitely changed the match for the US. Josmer Altidore left the game to be replaced by Akpan as mentioned, and Dax McCarty came on for Sal Zizzo. I can only imagine that Zizzo was injured as well (I thought I saw him hobble off a bit), as McCarty is certainly not the ideal replacement winger. Losing both these players certainly hurts the US. Altidore's physical presence was certainly missed as Akpan really had little impact, and McCarty just isn't a winger and has really contributed very little.

Extra time is about to start. Overall, a poor poor performance from the US, but a good team wins even when they play bad and hopefully the US can grind out a victory.

1 Word- Ugly

My word that was an ugly half of football. Both sides are playing very poorly, and for some reason it has made me rather upset, so expect a rather harsh assesment of a few players. First, Valentin you suck...why Rongen has him in there over Sarkodie is beyond me. Sarkodie was brilliant against Brazil and fully deserved to start tonight. Sturgis has been solid in the back, but why the heck is every ball you play a long one? Yes, a few have opened up the Uruguay defense, but is there a reason every single ball you play bypasses the midfield? And will someone please find Adu with the ball. Every time he touches it something dangerous occurs. While he's yet to truly breakthrough the Uruguayan defense, he is clearly the most dangerous player so why on earth are we neglecting him? And please get Rogers off the field. Yes, he's drawn a few fouls, but he has given away just as many. Which brings me to another point, stop fouling!!!! We're lucky to have not been scored on yet with the number of fouls we have given away near our box.

Perk has done well deputizing for the injured Seitz, although he hasn't really been tested yet. It's unfortunate for Seitz as he has been brilliant so far, but hopefully Perk can put in a solid performance for us. Ok, not sure why I'm so pessimistic and overly critical at the moment, but lets hope for a better second half because the first was dreadful.

Calm down boys, and play like you can!

Preview- US U20's vs Uruguay U20's

Well, we've moved into the knock-out rounds of the FIFA U20 World Cup. After an outstanding group stage performance, in which the US came out as the group winners in what was widely considered the group of death (while also outscoring everyone else in the competition with 9 goals), the US will now have the tricky test of facing Uruguay.

Uruguay advanced by being one of the 4 best third placed sides. They started off the tournament well gaining a 2-2 draw against one of the pre-tournament favorites, Spain. They then disposed of U20 World Cup newbies, Jordan, before unexpectedly falling to Zambia 2-0 in their final group game.

I only managed to watch their final group game against Zambia (along with several of my ecstatic Zambian teammates). The game left a lot to be desired (in fact I believe I fell asleep before the final whistle had blown), and obviously left Uruguay stunned. However, the US should hardly underestimate the South Americans. This tournament sounds eerily familiar to the 2005 World Cup, where the US, once again, advanced as group winners out of the group of death (Argentina, Germany, and Egypt) before falling to an Italian squad that had underperformed in the group stage.

The US cannot afford to make the same mistake twice, and I'm sure holdovers from that World Cup- Freddy Adu, Nate Sturgis, and Danny Szetela- have already warned their side against complacency. While in the match I saw, Uruguay should certainly not pose too much of a threat, they do have a few players that could turn the tide. Most notably is forward Edinson Cavani who plies his trade in the Serie A with Palermo. Cavani has scored twice in these championships, and the US will need to pay close attention to him.

Let us not also forget that the Uruguayans did manage to tie Spain 2-2, showing that they are no slouches when playing to their potential.

However, if Freddy Adu and Co. show up to play as they did against Poland and Brazil, I have to feel confident. The US must immediately be considered one of the heavy favorites to go all the way in this tournament after their impressive group display. They have played some sublime football, and with their high powered offense, and the beast that is known as Chris Seitz in the net, they may have what it takes to go all the way.

Prediction- 3-1 US

Things get tighter at the Top!

Highlights

Well it was a long trip back (we got back at 4 am), but it was a pleasant trip as we came home with a 3-2 win. Every game is important with the table so tight, but we battled back from an early deficit to claim 3 points and keep us in the thick of things for promotion. Some other results went our way as KuPS were held by GBK and TP-47 lost to Klubi04- who claimed their first victory of the season. I started the game on the bench, which I wasn't very pleased about. I thought I had a good week of practice, but I'm not the coach and I'll just keep working hard in training and hopefully, I'll get the starting nod soon. Jippo began the game just as we expected with 11 men behind the ball. It made it very tough going for us as there was little space to play in their half of the field. We didn't really create any clear cut chances and then gave up a goal from a cross and a nice header. We responded well though, continuing to possess the ball nicely and wait for our opportunity which came at the death of the half. A ball squeaked its way to the far post to Zeddy Saileti who then cooly placed it in the bottom far post corner. It really was a class finish from a class player. Just a nicely placed ball into the side netting. And boy was it an important goal. Going into the half down 1-0 could have spelled a world of problems. Jippo would have continued playing defensively and countering, but that injury time goal really opened up the game for us. With the score 1-1 starting the second half, Jippo took a more offensive posture leaving plenty of holes for us to exploit. I was inserted for Jusso Majava just after the half at right wing. Let me tell you that wing mid is a bit different then wing back. After 3 or 4 long runs I was definitely breathing a bit heavy, but was able to pace myself nicely to finish the match. I was very happy with my contribution. As soon as I came on I had the opportunity to take on their wing back 1 on 1, and after 2 stepovers I cut inside to shoot where it was blocked by a sliding defender. Then after a throw in, I peeled inside where after a good cross was played into our striker 'Drogba', he then dropped the ball down to me. I took a settling touch with my right thigh and then got a shot off with my left. It deflected off a defender and luckily right to Chileshi Chibwe who easily finished into the back of the net. The third goal came after a sublime touch from Zeddy. A bouncing ball came into him and with one touch played it into the path of an onrushing 'Droba' who held off his man to slot into the back of the net. I had another shot blocked inside the box, and nearly came off with another assist when I cut back for 'Drogba.' It was a bit behind him though and a defender managed to get himself in front of the shot. The last 15 minutes were a bit nervy for us though. We lost a bit of composure and let them score a rather week goal from a flicked header off of a throw in to the back post where it was easily placed in the net from a free mark. However, we held strong and came home 3-2 victors. I have to say I was pleased with myself and the team. I was brought on to make an impact and I definitely felt I did that. The team also played pretty well. We were good in possession and took advantage of the opportunities given to us.
